Closing the Retirement Gap Starts with a Conversation

Every day, millions of hardworking Americans go to work, provide for their families, and hope they're doing enough to prepare for retirement.

The challenge is that hope is not a strategy, and too many people have never had the opportunity to learn what retirement readiness really looks like. That's why I believe closing the retirement gap starts with a conversation.

Throughout my career as a financial educator and strategist, I've met people from every walk of life. Teachers, healthcare professionals, government employees, entrepreneurs, engineers, and retirees have all shared a similar concern.

"Am I going to be okay?"

They weren't looking for a magic investment or a quick fix. They wanted clarity. They wanted confidence. They wanted to know whether the years they had spent working hard would one day provide the retirement they envisioned.

What I discovered surprised me.

The challenge wasn't that people didn't care about their future. It wasn't that they lacked discipline or ambition.

The challenge was that many had never been taught how to prepare for retirement in a practical, understandable way.

For many families, retirement planning feels overwhelming because it has been made to seem complicated or reserved for those with significant wealth. As a result, too many people delay important decisions, believing they'll have time to figure it out later.

Unfortunately, later often arrives sooner than expected.

Retirement readiness isn't built during the last few years before retirement. It's built over time through informed decisions, consistent habits, and a financial strategy that grows with every stage of life.

That realization led me to ask a simple question:

What if we made financial education more accessible before people reached retirement?

What if communities came together to make retirement readiness part of everyday conversations instead of waiting until it became an emergency?

What if employers, educators, financial professionals, attorneys, accountants, nonprofit organizations, faith leaders, and community advocates worked together to help families make informed financial decisions?

Those questions inspired the creation of the Closing the Retirement Gap Alliance.

The Alliance is built on a simple belief: retirement readiness should not depend on luck, income level, or where someone happens to learn about money. Every hardworking family deserves access to practical financial education, trusted resources, and a supportive community that helps them prepare for the future with confidence.

Our mission is bold but achievable:

Help 10,000 families build retirement readiness by 2036.

We know that mission cannot be accomplished by one organization alone. It requires collaboration, education, and a shared commitment to serving our communities.

That's why the Alliance brings together professionals and organizations from different industries who believe financial education has the power to strengthen families, workplaces, and entire communities.

Whether someone is just beginning their career, raising a family, running a business, or approaching retirement, there is always an opportunity to make better-informed financial decisions.

The conversation simply needs to begin.

That's also the vision behind the Closing the Retirement Gap Experience, where individuals, families, employers, and community leaders come together to learn, ask questions, share ideas, and take practical steps toward a more secure financial future.

Because retirement isn't just about reaching a certain age.

It's about having the freedom to make choices, the confidence to enjoy the years you've worked so hard for, and the ability to leave a lasting legacy for those who come after you.

The retirement gap didn't appear overnight.

It won't be closed overnight either.

But every meaningful change begins the same way.

With one conversation.

Let's start that conversation together.
